ICP Building Guide

An ICP is a filter, not a description. Write it as: [industry] with [size] in [geography], where [buyer] feels [pain], especially when [trigger]. Then add an anti-ICP who you explicitly exclude. If your ICP doesn't exclude most of the market, it isn't finished.
The five firmographic fields
- Industry / vertical (specific: 'cybersecurity MSPs', not 'IT').
- Company size (headcount or revenue band).
- Geography (country or region you can serve).
- Business model (B2B/B2C, recurring vs project).
- Tech stack, when it's a qualifier.
Pain and trigger: the two that matter most
Fit (firmographics) tells you who could buy. Pain tells you why. Trigger (funding, hiring, expansion, leadership change) tells you why now. Outbound aimed at fit alone converts at a fraction of fit + trigger.
Write the anti-ICP
List who you refuse: wrong size, wrong model, no budget authority, no one to take the call. The anti-ICP is what makes list building fast and messaging sharp.
Pressure-test against real deals
Pull your last 10–20 closed-won deals and score them against the draft ICP. If the best customers fail your own filter, the filter is wrong adjust until reality passes.
FAQ
- What does ICP stand for?
- Ideal Customer Profile a precise description of the company most likely to buy, succeed, and stay. It's a company-level filter; buyer personas sit inside it.
- How narrow should an ICP be?
- Narrow enough that a list built from it feels uncomfortably small. You can always run a second ICP as a second campaign.
- How often should ICPs change?
- Review quarterly. Triggers and pains shift with the market faster than firmographics do.
