Clay Guide

Clay is a data orchestration platform: spreadsheet-style tables where each column can be an enrichment (find email, company data), an AI step, or logic. Its killer pattern is the waterfall trying multiple data providers per row and paying only for verified hits. Start with one workflow: ICP list in, verified contacts out.
The mental model
A Clay table is a pipeline, not a spreadsheet. Rows are prospects; columns are steps: import → filter → enrich (waterfall) → verify → score → export to sequencer or CRM. Each column only runs on rows that survive the previous filter.
Columns that matter
- Enrichment columns 100+ providers (Apollo, Clearbit-style firmographics, email finders).
- Waterfall columns chained providers with pay-on-success.
- AI columns (Claygent) research and draft from row data.
- Formula/logic columns scoring, routing, dedupe keys.
The first three workflows to build
- ICP list builder: source → dedupe → waterfall email → verify → export.
- CRM enrichment: new CRM record → firmographics + tech stack backfilled.
- Signal monitor: job postings/funding → contact find → sequence push.
Credit discipline
Clay charges credits per enrichment. Filter and dedupe before enriching, run cheap columns before expensive ones, and bring your own API keys where supported (often 0 credits). Model spend with the Clay Cost Calculator before scaling.
FAQ
- What is Clay used for?
- Building lead lists and data pipelines: pulling prospects from sources, enriching them across multiple providers, scoring, and pushing them into sequencers and CRMs without writing a full custom pipeline.
- Is Clay a database?
- No it's an orchestration layer over data providers. Your CRM remains the system of record; Clay is the factory that fills it.
- How much does Clay cost?
- Plans run on monthly credit allotments; effective cost depends on how many credits each enrichment action burns. Bring-your-own-key setups and waterfalls cut real spend substantially.
